Malkangiri: In another case of anomalies in government-run residential schools in tribal dominated Malkangiri district, several girl students were taken ill after consuming stale food in the hostel.
Reportedly, more than five students suffering from diarrhea have been hospitalised while several others are suffering from food poisoning and are being treated in the hostel.
The matter came to light today after some childline workers visited Satiguda Government Girl’s High School, located three kilometers away from the district headquarters.
According to childline workers, the incident occurred on August 15, when the students were served sweets and snacks before being served lunch. Later, many of them complained of health issues and were admitted to the hospital.
During the visit we also saw some ill-students were being given saline at the school. The school authorities were also tight-lipped about the issue, said a childline worker.
The students told the childline workers that they are served stale food very often in the hostel. Besides, if any student complains about the food, they have to face the wrath of the hostel authorities or even get suspended from the school.
Moreover, the school authorities also engage them in their personal works, the girls further alleged.
Meanwhile, some local activists rued that even though the district administration is aware of the pathetic condition of the hostels in the district, no action has been taken against the authorities concerned.
When asked about the issue, ST/SC development officer Ramakrushna Ganda said that, he is aware of the situation and admitted that around 20 students are suffering from illness. He also assured a probe into the matter.
