Mayurbhanj: The Mayurbhanj district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPc at the foothill area of Similipal to curb illegal stone quarrying and explosions.
As per reports, the stone mafia has been carrying out mining at various places of the foothill area under Khunta tehsil in Mayurbhanj district. Some is being transported to various parts of the district and other districts too.
Villagers said that though the district administration had taken several measures earlier, stone mining has not been stopped at all.
To the end the problem, the administration has eventually taken a tough stand by imposing the prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the area. The administration’s move has earned the support of the local people.
Local residents alleged that the mafias has been carrying out powerful explosions in the illegal quarries to extract stones. The explosions not only cause environmental pollution but also make cracks in houses and other structures in Subarnamanjari, Balipal, Sanpokhari and Sapanchua villages. The villagers had drawn attention of the district collector, the divisional forest officer and the superintendent of police toward their plight caused by the mining.
Kaptipada sub-collector Prabhat Kumar Mohapatra has issued a letter to Khunta police station inspector-in-charge(IIC) and Udala Sub-Divisional Police Officer(SDPO) to impose Section 144 in the area so that no stone mining would take place.
Carrying out the order of the sub-collector, Khunta IIC Niranjan Das has made the ban order effective.
