Cuttack: In compliance with an earlier directive of the Orissa High Court, the state government on Saturday appointed Dr Gyana Pratap Singh as the head of the urology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital here replacing Prof Datteswar Hota.
The HC in its May 22 hearing had directed the Health and Family Welfare department secretary to remove Hota from his post while hearing a petition filed by the post-graduate students of the urology department.
The health department has also directed the dean and principal of SCB to keep Hota away from supervising any examination duty.
According to sources, Amiya Shankar Pal and 11 other students had filed the petition in the HC alleging that Hota harassing them mentally and physically.
Acting on the petition, the HC had directed the state government to appoint another head of the department in place of Datteswar Hota within 10 days and keep him away from the examination process.
Initially, the postgraduate students of SCB had started cease work agitation on February 19 alleging that Hota constantly mentally harassed and abused postgraduate students and forced them to work on long duty hours in the hospital and then at his nursing home.
