New Delhi: After the chaos followed by scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, now the country is witnessing another bizarre incident leading to confusion in public. Amid rumours of a salt shortage, salt prices skyrocketed in different parts of Delhi, National Capital Region (NCR) and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday midnight.
The rumours of salt price going up to Rs 250 per Kg in Delhi/NCR and Rs 400 per Kg in UP went rife so much so that in Kanpur a woman named Savita (52) rushed to a grocery store to buy some salt and in the crowd she was pushed around and slipped into a drain, dying on the spot, the police said.
However, both Central and Delhi governments on Friday clarified that there has been no increase in price of the salt or no such shortage.
On the other hand, 11 people were arrested in connection with the incident in Ghaziabad for hoarding large stocks of salt and trying to sell it at inflated rates. Police has also increased patrolling in various parts as the rumours have spread like wildfire creating panic among the masses.
