Bhubaneswar: The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Disabilities Bill in what could be called as the first of any legislative action in the upper house of the parliament this winter session.
The house witnessed unusual cordiality with both the opposition and the ruling party setting aside their differences over the recent issues like Demonetisation, alleged misuse of office by Minister Kiran Rijiju on backdrop of a power project in Arunachal Pradesh started pitching for immediate passage of the bill.
BSP Chief Mayawati, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury all pressed for the bill. The bill was passed with little debates partly during the zero hour and partly post lunch.
The bill stipulates jail imprisonment upto two year and a maximum fine of Rs five lakh against anyone found guilty of discrimination against differently abled persons.
