Bengaluru: In a startling catch, the Income Tax department has seized Rs 5.7 crore of new notes, 32kgs gold jewellery and Rs 90 lakh worth of demonetised notes from a Hawala dealer’s bathroom in Karnataka on Saturday.
Acting on a tip off, the IT department raided Hawala dealer’s Chitradurga and Hubali residence and seized huge amount of money. During the raid investigating sleuths uncovered a secret chamber in the bathroom of his residence where all the money was stashed.
After demonetisation it is the second incident of Karnataka, in where a huge amount of cash has been seized. Earlier on December 1 the IT department raided Bengaluru and other locations and seized 4.7 crore cash in new notes.
After the government scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes the IT department is conducting raid in various place across the country. As per sources the highest number of notes have seized from Karnataka. Total Rs 166 crores alleged undisclosed assets and 127 kg gold seized from this state.
