“Restore my work, or else I won’t appear before you”; Justice CS Karnan tells SC

Justice

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday declined to restore administrative and judicial work to Calcutta High Court Judge Justice CS Karnan, against whom the top court issued a bailable warrant in a contempt case earlier this month.

A seven-judge-bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar gave him four weeks to respond to its contempt notice.

After his requests to have his work restored weren’t accepted, Justice Karnan said he wouldn’t appear before the bench next time, and that he could be imprisoned.

The court had taken a dim view of Justice Karnan complaints against 20 sitting and retired judges to curb what he had called “high corruption” in the judiciary. When he did not respond to summons, the top court was forced to issue a bailable warrant served on him by the Kolkata Police Commissioner.
