Bhubaneswar: Vehicular movement on the busy road connecting Vani Vihar and Master Canteen was hit today after students of the Rama Devi (RD) Women’s University staged a road blockage demanding retention of autonomous status for the varsity’s Plus-II and Plus-III colleges.
The students of the varsity shouted slogans by holding placards and later blocked the road by burning tyres. The students alleged that despite Rama Devi was famous as a college and the Plus-II and Plus-III students are its identity, the State Government has decided to separate the Plus-II and Plus-III colleges after it got a University tag.
The students locked the main gate of the varsity and sat on dharna earlier in the day. A police team led by Sahid Nagar Police Station IIC reached to spot and pacified the students by assuring them that their demands will be considered after a discussion with the Higher Education Minister.
“The Higher Education Secretary’s reply was not satisfactory. Hence, we don’t have any trust on the concerned department. Since Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has always raised voice for women empowerment, we hope that will consider our demands and take steps accordingly”, said an agitating student.
Meanwhile, police personnel have been deployed at the spot to avoid any untoward incident. The agitating students have also threatened to intensify the stir in front of the college gate until and unless their demands are fulfilled.
