Odisha is in command against Maharastra by imposing follow on after the rivals got all out for a meagre 94 runs during the morning session on second day of the eighth round Ranji Trophy match played at Krishnagiri stadium in Wayanad in Kerala. Maharashtra slumped to such a low score in reply to Odisha’s 319 runs in the first innings.
All three pace bowlers Basant Mohanty, Suryakant Pradhan and Deepak Behera wreaked havoc on Maharasthra batting line up by taking 3, 4 and 3 wickets respectively in their first innings while now Maharashtra has lost two quick wickets at team score of 24, both of which were scalped by Suryajkant.
The SM Gugale led team could manage to play only 26 overs before the follow on. Bowler AA Sanklecha scored 18 as the highest individual score of the innings followed by last man MM Sayyad who made 16. Interestingly, the extras given by Odisha were 19 which was more than any individual scores of the innings.
The day started with the last pair of Odisha Basant Mohanty who was batting on 6 and Dhiraj Singh adding 8 more runs in 2.4 overs before Basant becoming Sanklecha’s fifth wicket of the innings. After Odisha innings, Maharashtra couldn’t sustain one full session and all its batsmen got out cheaply on a pitch that supports fast bowlers.
On the first day of the four-day long match Odisha were asked to bat after losing toss and with fifties from former captain Biplab Samantray (89) and allrounder Dipak Behera (58) and some useful contributions from other batsmen Odisha could score 311 losing 9 wickets till stumps were drawn on the day. Maharashtra also had given 43 extra runs in Odisha’s first innings.
Odisha has a golden chance to go for an outright innings win that will allow a bonus point and take the team to third position in their group.
