Bhubaneswar: Odisha bowlers restricted the strong batting line up of table topper Karnataka to a meager 179 runs. But by the end of first day’s play in the seventh round of Ranji Trophy match at the Airforce Complex Ground, Palam, New Delhi, Odisha have lost both its openers for a paltry 41 runs. Captain Govinda Poddar is batting on 16 off 20 balls with three fours along with night-watchman Dhiraj Singh who is yet to open his account.
Karnataka couldn’t sustain the disciplined bowling attack of Odisha that was coordinated with effective ground fielding. The southern state team lost first two of its wickets to run outs. For Karnataka, wicketkeeper CM Gautam top scored with 54 runs while captain Vinay Kumar and lower order batsman Gowtham K contributed 16 and 21 runs respectively to take the team total to 179. Karnataka was all out half an hour into the final session of the day.
For Odisha, veteran pace spearhead Basant Mohanty took 3 wickets while all-rounder Biplab Samantray pocketed 2. Suryakant Pradhan, Alok Mangaraj and spinner Dhiraj Singh bagged one wicket each.
In reply, both Odisha openers Sandeep Pattnaik and Ranjit Singh started sedately. While Sandeep was setting to go for a big score he was caught by Samartha R off Arvind Sreenath’s bowling when the team score was 23. Skipper Govinda Poddar joined Ranjit who was very watchful and was batting on 6 off 45 balls when he unfortunately got run out while on the non-striker’s end.
Odisha has a chance of taking first innings lead and score as many runs possible to try to go for a outright win over Karnataka.
