Trivandrum: Odisha batting line up crumbled again on the third day of the last league match of the Ranji Trophy and succumbed to innings defeat against fellow quarter-finalist Jharkhand at Trivandrum in Kerala.
With this win Jharkhand topped the table from group B while Odisha remained at the third position. Both the teams had qualified before this match that was rescheduled following postponement of its earlier fixture in Tamil Nadu.
Odisha in their second innings were all-out for 103 conceding the match by an innings and 93 runs. For Jharkhand Kaushal Singh and Shabaz Nadeem took 3 wickets each while Ajay Yadav bagged 2 scalps. None of the Odisha batsmen could contribute substantially.
On the day when 14 wickets fell, the pitch showed dual nature. Jharkhand made 348 earlier in the day. Kaushal Singh not only created problem for Odisha batsmen by his spin bowling, he had made 86 not out today to take the team lead by 196 runs. he was denied a well deserved century as one of their batsman Sunny Gupta was retired hurt and could not come to bat again. Captain Saurabh Tiwary who was retired hurt yesterday came to bat today and added 13 more runs to his score before being out for 78. Virat Singh also had made 57 for them.
Basant Mohanty took 3 wickets while Dhiraj Singh and Deepak Behera bagged 2 wickets apiece and Suryakant Pradhan and Govinda Poddar scalped one each.
The quarter finals will start from December 24. Along with these two teams Karnatak has qualified from this group for quarters. From Group ‘A’ Mumbai, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat have qualified for quarters along with Hyderabad and Haryana from group C.
