Raja Acharya bail issue: Commissionerate Police urges for strict rules

Gangster Raja Acharya gets bail from apex court; Leslie & Gita fear threat to life

Bhubaneswar: After the bail granted by the apex court against the gangster Sandeep alias Raja Acharya, the Twin City Commissionerate Police on Tuesday moved the District and Sessions Judge Court here urging for imposition of stringent restrictions on him before ordering his release from jail.

Police Commissioner YB Khurania that the Commissionerate Police has appealed the court to impose stringent restrictions before the release of murder convict Raja Acharya from jail which includes not to threaten the witnesses of the case, present himself in the local police station every day, not to tamper with the evidence, inform the police before leaving the city and to cooperate in the case.

However, the Commisionerate Police is yet to receive the bail order. Khurania said that after receipt of the bail order, it can be ascertained that on which ground he was granted bail.

After the Supreme Court granted bail to Raja, Biranchi’s wife Gitanjali Panda had alleged threats to her life and five other witnesses while demanding security cover from the city police.

Actresses Leslie Tripathy and Bidusmita had also apprehended threats to their lives if Raja is released on bail.

Meanwhile, Gitanjali had given in writing to the CP to provide her and the witnesses’ protection. Earlier, 15 police personnel were engaged to provide protection to her and the witnesses while the case was being heard in the Bhubaneswar District and Session Court.

The court convicted him in the murder of the judo coach and sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2011.

However, Raja and his lawyer approached the Orissa High Court against the lower court’s decision but the hearing has not been held even till today.

Later, the gangster knocked at the doors of the doors of the Supreme Court and managed to get bail from the apex court on March 10, 2017.

Raja’s legal counsel Swagat Ray informed that the District Court here granted him bail in lieu of Rs 1,00,000 surety bond and a legitimate bailer.
