Bhubaneswar: Railway Stations would soon go cashless with the ministry asking top banks like SBI, ICCI among others to install about 15,000 Point of Sale (PoS) machines at reservation counters.
PoS wouold enable officials to issue tickets without having to worry about cash as machines would be enabled by swiping machines compatible for debit and credit cards.
A senior rail board official said currently there are about 12,000 ticket counters in country with most of them have been planned to be equipped with PoS machines. Depending on daily transactions one to two PoS would be installed at ticket counters. This would reduce the burden on cash counters, he said.
As many as 1000 machines are likely to be installed at major railway stations in the first phase by December 31.
Sources said railways are 100 per cent cashless for freight collection while for reservation category it is just 55 per cent and still totally offline when it comes to unreserved ticket payments.
With post demonetization attempts to instill cashless transactions has been a major target for sectors like railways which has nonetheless seen upsurge in online transactions in recent years.
