New York: Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated ninth-seeded Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinal battle and advanced to the semifinals of the US Open 2018 Championship in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday.
Nadal will now face the third-seeded Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals. Nadal after worst start with the loss of 6-0 bounced back to beat No. 9 Dominic Thiem with 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) at a third consecutive Grand Slam tournament.
It was Nadal’s fourth time in 282 career Grand Slam matches when he started with a 6-0 loss. The World No.1, for the first time, started the match with such a worst beginning.
The battle lasted nearly five hours and the match finished in the early morning with 0-6, 6-4,7-5, 6-7, 7-6 scoreline.
Nadal has reached at least the quarter-finals in all four Grand Slams this year – the first time he has achieved the feat since 2011.
Thiem entered the quarter-final after he knocked out South African fifth seed Kevin Anderson – the man who lost in the final to Nadal at Flushing Meadows last year – in three sets earlier on Sunday.
