Sambalpur: A sex racket running from a newly-constructed house in Brundavan Vihar near Budharaja hills in Sambalpur district was busted by Ainthapali police on Saturday.
Acting on a tipoff, a special police team led by inspector-in-charge Chintamani Pradhan conducted surprise raid at the house located in a secluded place at around 2 pm and busted the flesh trade racket.
A couple who was running the sex racket and six clients were arrested during the raid while four prostitutes engaged in the racket were rescued. The police team seized condoms, birth control pills, a laptop, pen drive, 14 cellphones, Rs 9,995 in cash, three motorcycles and bank passbooks from the house.
Although SP Sanjeev Arora confirmed that the sex racket was busted, Ainthapali police did not comment on the issue and said the detailed would be revealed at a press conference. Later, the police issued a press note in this regard.
A highly-placed source said the house from where the sex racket was being operated belongs to a journalist for which pressure mounted on the police and they remained tightlipped about the issue.
According to sources, Sukant Mallick (32) of Kendrapara and Surekha (32) of Sambalpur introduced them as couple and took the house on rent. Soon after taking the house on rent, the couple started the flesh trade. They contact prostitutes and clients through phones and earned huge amounts.
The others arrested persons were identified as Manik Singh (32) of Sambalpur, Akhu Sharma (21), Jiten Baral (33) of Sonepur, Dhruba Behera of Boudh, Akash Khanna of Madhya Pradesh. The identity of another person was not ascertained.
A day earlier, Ainthapali police busted a sex racket operating from a rented house in Shakti Nagar area of Sambalpur district and detained four youths, including the owner of the house, and rescued three women engaged in the flesh trade.
