Guwahati: Bollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra is in the eye of a controversy for her pictures on a calendar of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation revealing her cleavage.
Congress MLAs termed her picture inappropriate and immodest that showed her bearing a revealing top that exposed her cleavage.
The Congress says Priyanka, the brand ambassador for Assam tourism, has brought disrepute to the Assamese culture.
The Congress says frock is not a symbol of Assamese culture and felt she should have worn Mekhala, Chadar, the traditional Assamese attire instead.
The BJP however retorted that the Congress wants Priyanka Gandhi instead of Priyanka Chopra to be the ambassador. Jayanta Malla Baruah, Chairman of Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) said the calendar was meant for international audience and had not demeaned Assamese cultue in any manner.
Tourism Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma too strongly defended Priyanka Chopra and said that there was nothing wrong in Priyanka weaing an Assamese Japi (headgear) while sporting a frock. “Aren’t we wearing Japi on long pants,” he asked.
