Presidential Poll 2017: Voting begins at Odisha Assembly

Bhubaneswar: The Presidential Poll will witness a battle between NDA candidate and former Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition candidate former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to become the 14th President of India at 10 am on Monday.

BJD in support of Kovind has total 117 MLAs with 2 independent law makers, while the regional party has 19 Lok Sabha and 8 Rajya Sabha MPs in hand with a total of 28 parliamentarians. The state BJP unit has 10 MLAs and one MP of the lower house.

Extending support for its Presidential nominee, the state unit of Congress has 15 MLAs and one MP of the upper house, while its alliance CPM has 2 MLAs including one independent in hand.

Meanwhile, the voting procedure has been commenced at 10 am which will continue till 5 pm today at Room no-54 of the Odisha Assembly.

At the outset, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, LoP Narasingha Mishra and BJP’s Rourkela MLA Dilip Ray have already casted their votes for their respective candidates so far.

The poll process at the state assembly is being conducted by Returning Officer Amiya Kumar Sarangi and Asst Returning Officer Bhabani Shankar Senapati.
