New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee, inaugurating a function at the Bigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday to commemorate the 200th year celebration of the Paika Rebellion of Khordha, said the Paika Bidroha was India’s first War of Independence.
Mukhejee said the Paika Rebellion took place much before the Sepoy Mutiny. The British inflicted large-scale torture to suppress the rebellion.
Mukherjee urged everybody to concentrate on indigenous study materials through generations instead of following the British historians. He suggested for documentation of the Paika Rebellion.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, addressing the function, said the Paika Rebellion was a fight for Odia pride. The Odia people are still fighting for their pride.
Patnaik said the Paika Mutiny was the country’s first War of Independence. The State Cabinet has passed a resolution to accord the Paika Bidroha the status of country’s first War of Independence and hoped that the Central Government would concede this status.
On the occasion, the President felicitated 150 Paika descendants.
