Bhubaneswar: Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy landed in controversy again for his statement over farmer suicide issue today.
Speaking to the media men after an event, the Maharathy said that Odisha farmers die only when the House is in session.
Mocking over the farmer suicide cases, he said, “Odisha farmers die, only when the Assembly is in session. After the session concluded, no such case has been reported yet.”
Maharathy delivered this controversial statement while attending a book launching event organized here at the Odisha State Archives.
“Odia farmers live with dignity. No farmer had committed suicide even in difficult times like famine in 1866 or the Super Cyclone in 1999,” he added.
Maharathy’s statement invited a flood of criticism from Opposition leaders.
