Srinagar: In a shocking incident, an officer of the Jammu and Kashmir police was brutally beaten to death by a mob outside the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar during congregational prayers at the mosque in the old city late on Thursday evening.
Police identified the officer as deputy superintendent of police Mohammed Ayub Pandit. He was on duty when the mob attacked him, sources said.
DSP Pandit was posted on security duty outside the mosque, when he was attacked by a mob. Three of the accused have been identified and two have been arrested.
DSP Pandit, the police said, may have opened fire as a last resort in self-defence. Three people who were injured were all shot in the legs, which showed that even under attack the officer was conscious not to shoot to kill, they said. The DSP’s service revolver is missing.
Police reinforcements were rushed to the area and the authorities announced restrictions on people’s movement in seven police station areas of the city.
