Bhubaneswar: After skipper Govinda Poddar hit a double ton, it was the turn of former captain Biplab Samantray who scored a century to propel the lead for Odisha to 158 runs against Assam in the Ranji Trophy match played at Rajiv Gandhi International stadium in Hyderabad.
Till stumps were drawn on third day of this 4-day match Odisha are batting on 459 for 7 in their first innings in reply to Assam’s 301. All-rounder Deepak Behera is batting on 28 with Suryakanta Pradhan who is on 2.
The day belonged to Poddar and Samantray. While Poddar dominated first two sessions of the day, it was Samantray’s turn to stamp his authority on the third session. Poddar who was on 81 on day-2 continued his batting and scored a magnificent 225, his highest first-class score before being caught by Assam captain KB Arun Kartick off Abu Nechim Ahmed’s bowling. After his dismissal Samantray took charge and hit a well-crafted 103 before he was bowled by Arup Das who totaled his wickets for the innings to 3.
In the morning, another overnight batsman Subhransu Senapati couldn’t add any run to his yesterday’s score of 34 and was bowled by Arup Das in the first over of the day. Though Abhishek Yadav got a start and scored 29, he could not convert it into a big score. After Poddar’s dismissal, wicketkeeper Saurabh Rawat was run-out in quick succession, but Samantray and Deepak added a 51 for 7th wicket.
Odisha will aim to up the ante in the first session tomorrow and score rapidly before forcing Assam to bat as many overs possible to extract a win.
