Bhubaneswar: An employee of Puri Jagannath temple was on Monday caught stealing cash from the shrine hundi (donation box). The employee Uma Rath has been placed under suspension.
“Rath grabbed some money, including a new Rs 2,000 note when the counting of the day’s donation was in progress. He himself was engaged in counting the cash along with others. Some other employees caught him. The stolen cash was recovered from him,” temple’s public relations officer Laxmidhar Pujapanda said.
Temple sources said three employees of the temple, including Rath and some officers of a nationalized bank were counting the donation amount inside a closed room under CCTV camera surveillance inside the temple. Rath’s alleged handiwork was captured in the CCTV cameras.
