Guwahati: In a tragic incident, a ferry boat carrying around 40 passengers sank in the Brahmaputra river near Guwahati today. Reportedly, 12 passengers managed to swim back ashore while others went missing.
According to sources, the incident occurred at around 1.30 pm when the boat ferrying about 40 passengers and eight two-wheelers was heading to north Guwahati from Guwahati. Suddenly, the boat started sinking after the engines malfunctioned.
A 25-member team of State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has been pressed in to carry out a search operation of the missing persons, said a source.
According to available information the rescue team has retrieved a body of teenage girl passenger after two hours of ordeal. The search operation is underway to trace the 23 others.
