Bhubaneswar: Purnima Hembram of Orissa on Thursday clinched heptathlon gold while another state athlete Jauna Murmu bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 200m on the final day of the 22nd Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championship in Patiala.
Purnima finished with a total of 5815 points. Liksy Joseph of Kerala settled for silver with 5299 points while M Sowmiya of Tamil Nadu bagged the bronze with 5173 points.
Purnima, who started the day with 3380 points lost her long jump event by a whisker to Liksy. But she recovered well to win the next two events – javelin throw and 800m to surge ahead.
“The competition level was pretty tough. I am quite satisfied with the result. It will give me a lot of boost for the future,” an elated Purnima stated.
In the women’s 200 m, Jauna clocked 24.64 seconds to finish third. Hima Das (23.37s) of Assam clinched the gold medal. Sneha PJ (24.47s) of Karnataka bagged the silver.
Jauna stated that she could have performed much better. “I got a bad start and that affected my momentum. At the hindsight I could have easily won the silver medal,” Jauna stated.
