Odisha to examine presence of formalin content in fishes imported from Andhra Pradesh

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has decided to examine samples of fish imported from Andhra Pradesh as Assam government banned sale of fish from other states after the presence of cancer-causing chemical formalin content found.

Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Minister Pradeep Maharathy has asked the Secretary, Directorate of Fisheries to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a report.

“Fish samples imported from Andhra Pradesh will be examined in laboratory and an expert team will be formed for this purpose. Necessary action will be taken following the report of the expert team,” said Maharathy.

Assam government has banned import and sale of fish from Andhra Pradesh and other states for a period of 10 days after a cancer-inducing chemical which is used to keep dead fish fresh, was detected in fish being sold in markets areas of Guwahati.

The presence of formalin content in the fish came to notice after the health department of Assam government carried out a laboratory test.
