Odisha sees rise in domestic violence cases

Bhubaneswar: The number of cases of dowry torture and domestic violence against women in the state has seen a sharp rise.

Failing to get justice after knocking the door of police, victims are seeking help from Women Commission in Odisha.

Out of total 2924 cases registered with State Commission for Women, 1777 cases were related to dowry and domestic violence.

While 814 cases of dowry torture and divorce for dowry were reported, 58 cases of dowry death and 42 cases of dowry suspect death were registered with the women rights body in the year 2016-17.

During the year 963 domestic violence cases were registered with the Commission, which was highest.

Besides, 38 complaints of rape, 120 allegations of physical relation on the pretext of marriage, 69 cases of kidnap, 93 cases related to land rights, 29 complaints of sexual exploitation, 78 reports of workplace harassment, 175 cases of eve-teasing and 445 cases of violation of women rights were registered with the Women Commission.

Total 2488 cases, including the above-mentioned complaints and pending cases, were resolved by the Commission, the annual report submitted to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday by the Commission read.
