Bhubaneswar: Odisha crushed Maharashtra with an innings and 118 runs to register an emphatic win and pocket a bonus point to jump to third spot of the points table on Wednesday at the Ranji match in Wayanad. This big win has also opened up Odisha’s hope of playing in the knock out for the first time after the new group systems were introduced in Ranji Trophy.
Odisha pacers managed to take all the 20 opposition wickets within a day. In the morning session the rivals had been bowled out for a paltry 94 runs as they couldn’t withstand the pace attack of the Govinda Poddar led team. After being followed on, Maharashtra again faced the same dilemma and were almost getting out under 100 for the second time, as they went to tea on 49 for seven. However post tea wicketkeeper VV More (29 off 22 with 3X4, 1X6) and first innings highest scorer AA Sanklecha (22 off 23 with 4X4) counterattacked and added 55 runs for eighth wicket. Both fell on team score 101, as More was clean bowled by Biplab Samantray and Sanklecha was caught by Samantray off Basant Mohanty’s bowling.
Akshaya Darekar was the last man to get out, as he nicked one to wicketkeeper Saurabh Rawat off Samantray who took 4 wickets in this innings and Maharashtra were all-out in their second innings for 107 runs.
Their second innings started in the similar fashion with Suryakant Pradhan beginning the wicket taking process and Basant and Dipak joining him later. Suryakant took 3 wickets, Basant scalped 2 and allrounder Dipak grabbed one in the second innings of the rival team. Overall, Suryakant bagged 7 wickets while Basant claimed 5 wickets in the match.
The western state had succumbed to 94 in their first innings after the pace trio of Basant Mohanty, Suryakant Pradhan and Dipak Behera distributed wickets among themselves. Earlier Odisha had made 319 in its first innings with Biplab Samantray scoring 89 and Deepak Behera making 58 and others contributing significantly.
All rounder Biplab Samantray was adjudged the Man of the Match.
Post this victory, Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) Asirbad Behera has announced cash rewards of Rs 50,000 for four players: Basant Mohanty, Biplab Samantray, Suryakant Pradhan and Deepak Behera.
