Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of the Bi-centenary celebration of “Paika Bidroha”, the State Government strongly recommends to declare the Paika Mutiny of 1817 as the First War of Independence in the history of India.
Though the rebellion took place 40 years before the Sepoy Mutiny (1857) it neds to be rightly appreciated as the first war of independence.
The bravery of the Paikas and others to oust the mighty Britishers from Odisha is the tale of courage and patriotism. It was a well organized rebellion against the British and the impact of the rebellion was far reaching.
On the occasion of bi-centenary of the Paika Rebellion (1817-2017) the Government of Odisha earnestly requests the Centre to declare it as the first war of independence.
The State Government has mentioned that it would, indeed be a befitting tribute to declare the Paika Mutiny as the first war of independence on the occasion of 200 years completion of the historic event.
