Bhubaneswar: The state government has urged the Central Water Commission (CWC) to direct the Chhattisgarh government to intimate Odisha well in advance before opening gates of barrages over Mahanadi.
The State Government’s move came in the backdrop of Chhattisgarh opening 46 numbers of gates of Kalma barrage over Mahanadi in its territory that resulted in releasing a large amount of water to Hirakud reservoir.
“Being a downstream riparian state, we should have been informed about the gate operation activities of all barrages and medium and major irrigation projects well in advance for planning a better flood preparedness through Hirakud dam,” said water resources secretary Pradeep Jena in a letter (a copy of which is with TOI) to G S Jha, chairman, CWC.
Jena said advance information regarding release of flood water into Hirakud reservoir would help to implement appropriate flood mitigation strategies during the coming monsoon period.
The water resources secretary did not mention about the volume of water entering into the Hirakud reservoir due to opening of gates by the Chhattisgarh government.
