Bhubaneswar: Odisha pocketed 3 points against table topper Karnataka who had to be satisfied with one point only after both the captains decided to shake hands an hour before the schedule to draw the Ranji Trophy match played at Airforce Ground, Palam, New Delhi.
Odisha were batting on 63 without losing any wicket in 32 overs with openers Sandeep Pattnaik on 27 and Ranjit Singh on 35. Chasing a target of 230, both the openers played cautiously and didn’t allow the Karnataka bowlers to dominate over them. As the target was a tricky one, Odisha preferred to play it safe and garnered 3 points on the basis of first innings lead.
In the post lunch session, Karnataka were all-out for 393 with wicketkeeper CM Gautam top scoring with a 95 run knock followed by all-rounder Shreyas Gopal’s 77. For Odisha, spinner Dhiraj Singh took 5 wickets while captain Govinda Poddar bagged 2 scalps.
Earlier, Odisha had won the toss and elected to field first and the decision paid dividend, as they restricted the southern state to a meagre 179 runs on the first day only. In reply, despite a shaky start, with wicketkeeper Saurabh Rawat scoring 85 and Biplab Samantray making 58 and a useful lower order contribution Odisha scored 342 and took a lead of 163 runs.
Despite the match result and 3 points to Odisha, the position of both the teams in the table remains same. Odisha after seven rounds is at the middle of nine-member group with 15 points and Karnataka with 30 points lead the points standing.
