Angul: Vigilance sleuths today arrested Mahasmita Panda, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of NTPC Town police station in Angul district on charges of demanding and accepting bribe.

According to Vigilance source, the woman officer had demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 to withdraw a case.

The police had registered a case against family members of a girl for allegedly beating conductor of an Angul-Bhubaneswar bound bus, who had allegedly molested the girl inside the vehicle when she was travelling to Bhubaneswar on July 31.

The accused officer had demanded bribe to withdraw the case and taken Rs 5,000 in the first installment.

Later, she demanded Rs 10,000, following which brother of the girl, Suvendu Das, contacted the Vigilance office.

Vigilance sleuths laid a trap and arrested the officer red-handed while accepting the bribe money Rs 10,000 from the complainant at around 1 pm.
