Bhubaneswar: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the construction of the much-awaited Vehicular Under Pass (VUP) at Sikharpur Traffic Square in Cuttack.
In a letter to Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, Gadkari stated that the proposal for construction of VUP at Sikharpur Square in Chandikhole—Jagatpur—Bhubaneswar Section of National Highway 16 has been approved.
“Bids were invited on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode to execute the work. Two bidders have participated in the bid. The bids are under evaluation for the award of work. The work is targeted to be completed in 18 months from commencement date after award,” the letter added.
Earlier, Mahtab had requested Gadkari to issue necessary directions to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to commence construction of the VUP at Sikharpur.
In a letter to Gadkari on March 16, 2018, Mahtab stated that he had earlier racked up the issue with the union minister after meeting him in his office and presented the proposal in the Lok Sabha following the petition of the Senior Citizen Association of Sikharpur.
“The Petition Committee after long deliberations and hearing my views in its report No. 40 presented to Lok Sabha on 22 December 2017, has strongly recommended that the Ministry must resort to ‘out of box’ thinking on the issue and, adopt radical measures to come out with workable propositions to formalize the construction of new VUP at Sikharpur Traffic Square, Cuttack without further loss of precious time. The Committee, further, recommended that appropriate solution considering all possible options like introduction of ‘Box Pushing Technique’ should be adopted to mitigate the grievances of the local population,” Mahtab had stated in the letter.
