Bhubaneswar: In a letter to N Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today requested to stop the construction work of the Polavaram Project immediately and not to recommence till the issues concerning the state of Odisha are resolved.
It is reliably learnt that construction of the Polavaram Project is going on at a rapid pace without assessing the design flood and backwater extent in Malkangiri district, which is the violation of Godavari Water Dispute Tribunal (GWDT) and also not conforming national norms, the letter mentioned.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change vide its office memorandum dated 23.6.2015 had decided to keep the ‘stop work order’ in abeyance for one year based on the request of Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh vide his letter dated 25.4.2015 subject to several conditions, the letter added.
One of the conditions mentioned in the memorandum is that the Government of Andhra Pradesh, which had earlier assured not to impound the reservoir of the project till the issues raised by the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha are resolved, should not impound the reservoir without specific permission from the Union Ministry, it further added.
However, the construction work of the project is going on without any further permission from the Ministry, as per records available with Government of Odisha. No efforts have also been made to resolve the issues relating to the state of Odisha, it concluded.
