Narasinghpur custodial death: Collector announces Rs 2 lakh compensation
Cuttack: Cuttack Collector and District Magistrate on Tuesday announced compensation for the kin of custodial death victim in Narasinghpur area here.
The collector said that kin of victim Saroj Senapati alias Akula would be provided Rs 2 lakh as compensation from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Further a compensation amount of Rs 2000 was under Harischandra Yojana and Rs 10000 from DistrictCuttack Red Cross fund was also announced.
As per sources, after severe protests following the death of Akula, his kin and locals agitated in the SCB Hospital premises demanding action against the ones involved in the death of Akula. They staged a road blockade and filed an FIR against Narasinghpur IIC at Mangalabag PS demanding compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the bereaved kin.
It is to be noted that Akula succumbed to his injuries following his stay at Narasinghpur police station after he was detained on charges of having a heated altercation with a woman over grazing of a paddy field. He was put under custody on December 9 for questioning in connection with the incident after the woman lodged a complaint.
But during his stay in the PS his condition worsened and he was firstly admitted to local CHC and later shifted to SCB hospital where he took his last breath.
Akula’s family alleged that he was forcibly picked up from his house and beaten severely due to which he died but the police refuted any such allegations saying that Akula had instead bitten leg of a policeman and was injured. Following the incident the SP has directed a DSP level enquiry into the incident.
