Momo challenge claims youth’s life in Kendrapara
Kendrapara: Barely four days after the Crime Branch of Odisha police issued an advisory against Momo challenge, the deadly online game reportedly claimed the life of a youth in Kendrapara district.
Umakant Behera of Umar village in Mahanga block in the district allegedly committed suicide after playing the deadly game. His body was found hanging in an under-construction clubhouse near his home today morning.
According to sources, Umakant went to sleep after having dinner yesterday night. However, the family members found him missing in his room in the morning. Later, his body was found hanging in the under-construction house.
Although the family members called up an ambulance and rushed him to a hospital, the doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead. The family members of Umakant alleged that he took his life after playing the Momo challenge.
Upon being informed, police visited the house and seized the cellphone of the deceased. The police found Momo challenge application installed in the cellphone of the deceased. Further probe is underway, Mahanga IIC said.
Notably, in Momo Challenge, an unknown mobile number with the display picture of a doll’s distorted face with protruding eyes and wide mouth appears with a WhatsApp invitation. The perpetrators of this crime monitor the status and profiles of people on social media to target people with suicidal tendencies.
The scary features of the doll is used to catch the attention of teenagers, especially children. The link to the game is available mainly through WhatsApp. While the challenge allegedly throws a series of tasks at the players chosen, the final task is to ask the player to take their lives.
