New Delhi: Former president Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday took to Twitter to share a letter he got from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his last day in office, saying that ‘it touched his heart’.
Describing Mukherjee as a “father figure” and a “mentor”, Modi, in his letter, expressed gratitude to the former president for having guided him during his initial days in the national capital as PM.
Praising Mukherjee for his “simplicity, high principles and exemplary leadership”, Modi called the former president a repository of knowledge. “Pranab Da, our political journeys took shape in different political parties. Our ideologies, at times, have been different. Our experiences are also varied…Yet, such is the strength of your intellect and wisdom that we were able to work together with synergy,” the letter said.
“You belong to a generation of leaders for whom politics was simply a means to selflessly give back to society,” Modi added. The Prime Minister thanked Mukherjee for support, encouragement, guidance and inspiration, and ended the letter by saying “Rashtrapati ji, it has been an honour to work with you, as your Prime Minister!” It’s apparent from the letter that Pranab Da, too, touched the PM’s heart. On Thursday morning, the PM re-tweeted, “Pranab Da, I will always cherish working with you. @CitiznMukherjee”.
Pranab Mukherjee, a Congress party veteran, had won the Presidential election as a nominee of the Congress and the UPA, which have a vastly differing ideology from that of the BJP. But that ideological difference never hampered the PM-President relationship.
