New Delhi: Meira Kumar, the Congress-led Opposition nominee for presidential election, filed her nominations papers on Wednesday.
The former Lok Sabha Speaker was accompanied by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and other top leaders from 17 Opposition parties supporting her in the fight against BJP’s Ram Nath Kovind.
Before filing her nomination papers, Kumar went to Rajghat and paid floral tribute to Father of The Nation Mahatma Gandhi.
In the presidential election, Meira Kumar’s opponent is NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind, who was the governor of Bihar.
Both Meira Kumar and Ram Nath Kovind are leaders from the Dalit community.
Notably, President Pranab Mukherjee’s term ends on July 24. Voting for the next president is scheduled on July 17, while the counting will take place on July 20.
