Nabarnagpur: A local court in Nabarangpur district sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment in connection with the rape of a mentally challenged girl in 2017.
Special track court judge Manoranjan Das found Sakilram Gond guilty of raping the victim, a resident of Kosagumuda police limits. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5, 000 on the convict.
According to sources, the convict had raped the mentally unstable girl on March 20, 2017 when two neighbours spotted him. The neighbours had informed the girl’s brother who later lodged a complaint with Kosagumuda police.
The court pronounced the verdict on the basis of statements of 13 witnesses. Additional public persecutor Sudhakar Patnaik presented the case on behalf of the government.
In another case, Nabarangpur judicial magistrate Rajkishore Mohapatra sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with a murderous attack case.
The court found Sanjay Mohapatra guilty under separate sections and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment in each case and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. Failure to pay the fine will invite additional imprisonment of one year, the court said.
