Khurda: A day after a 28-year-old woman succumbed to burn injuries after she was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws for dowry in Khurda district, police on Friday arrested the deceased’s husband.
Debashish Barik, a resident of Dinagar village under Begunia police limits, was on the run along with his parents after setting his wife Chandrakanti Barik on fire.
Chandrakanti, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar with 90 per cent burns, lost her battle for life on Thursday.
According to sources, Chandrakanti, who hailed from Parvatipur village under Fathegarh police limits in Nayagarh district, had married Debashish 10 years back. The couple had a daughter and a son.
During the wedding, Chandrakanti’s in-laws had demanded Rs 50,000 cash and other household articles as dowry. However, her father managed to pay on Rs 20,000.
Soon after the marriage, Chandrakanti’s in-laws started torturing her demanding more dowry and a motorcycle. When she expressed her inability to pay the amount, she was subjected to inhumane torture by her in-laws.
On Sunday night, Debashish and his parents allegedly poured kerosene on Chandrakanti and set her on fire. She was first admitted to the district headquarters hospital in Khurda with 90 per cent burns. Later, she was shifted to Sum hospital in Bhubaneswar. After the incident, Chandrakanti’s husband called up her family and informed that she sustained burns due to gas leak.
In her dying statements, the victim explained how she was being tortured by her in-laws for dowry. She said her husband and in-laws poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
While Debashish was arrested, his father Rabi Barik and mother Manorama are still on the run. “Efforts are on to nab them,” police said.
