Sambalpur: Burla police here Friday nabbed a man on charges of extorting money from people in Burla Town and Hirakud area by issuing life threats.
The accused was identified as Rupesh Kusum of Bohidarbandh Modipada under town police limits. A country-made pistol and two live bullets were seized from his possession.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the in-laws’ house of the accused at Mahatab Nagar here. In a bid to escape, Kusum tried to open fire but the cops overpowered him.
According to police, Kusum had been extorting money by threatening people in the area. Kusum is a habitual offender and several criminal cases are registered against him at many police stations in the district.
A case (268/2018) under Section 307 of the IPC and Sections 25 and 27 of Arms Act was registered in this regard.
