Man-eater leopard brought to Nandankanan zoo

Bhubaneswar: The man-eater leopard which had killed a four-year boy in Haladi village in Nuapada district on May 26, finally brought in to Nandankanan zoo today.  The leopard here will remain in a isolated enclosure under observation for a week.

A leopard was trapped in a cage set up by the Forest Department personnel on July 15.

The animal had spread a reign of terror in the area and recently attacked and injured two persons. The Forest personnel had been searching for the big cat since then.

On May 26 night, the leopard had picked up four-year-old Chhagan and mauled him to death. Chhagan was the son of Ketki Pandey and Hiralal Pandey. Villagers recovered the head of the boy from the forest nearby and it is believed that the animal ate the torso. The incident took place when the boy’s family members were sleeping outside their house.

Earlier, the villagers had spotted the leopard at the Shiva temple atop the hillock and since then, efforts were underway by the Forest department officials to trap the animal.
