Malkangiri suicide: Naveen announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for victim’s kin

Malkangiri: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for the family of a Class X girl who had committed suicide after being sexually exploited by the school headmaster.

Hours after the CM announced the ex-gratia, Kalimela tehsildar handed over the amount to the deceased’s family in the presence of local MLA Manas Madkami.

A day earlier, police arrested the headmaster of SSD Girls High School at Sikhpalli of Malkangiri district, Biswajit Sarkar, for repeatedly sexually assaulting the minor girl and abetting her suicide.

The 14-year-old girl was found dead with an incised wound on her left in the computer room of the school on the night of August 2. A note found inside the notebook of the deceased girl had revealed that the accused headmaster was involved in the sexual assault of minor girls in the school.

After the arrest of the accused, another girl from the school came forward and revealed before the police that the headmaster had sexually assaulted her too.

The district collector had suspended five employees of the school including the accused headmaster in connection with the death of the Class X girl. The four others who were put under suspension were two teachers, the hostel warden and the night watchman.
