Bhubaneswar: An expert team has been formed by the state government under the Health & Family Welfare department regarding Japanese Encephalitis (JE) situation in Malkangiri. Prof Jacob John, renowned clinical virologist, has been appointed the chairperson of the team.
The team had its first meeting today with Principal Secretary Health Arti Ahuja discussing the JE situation in the district with the team along with a detailed presentation.
So far 248 children have been affected of which 119 are boys and 129 girls. Of this, 105 are JE affected and 74 Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) affected. There have been 74 deaths so far and children between the age group of 5 to 10 years have been affected, said the health department officials.
The expert team was also given reports of observations of the Central team that had visited Malkangiri last month alongwith details of the present situation. Officials from Regional Medical Research Centre and Vector Control Research Centre also presented their observations. The team would visit to Malkangiri on Friday.
