New Delhi: The Centre on Monday apprised the Supreme Court about issue of notification by November 19 over formation of a special tribunal to resolve Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The government of Odisha has been demanding for the formation of a Water Tribunal by the Central Government to resolve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute.
The Supreme Court on August 28 deferred the hearing on the petition by Odisha for the formation of a tribunal to October 9 as the Centre sought four more weeks to present data on the formation of a special tribunal to adjudicate the case.
The Centre had earlier sought time twice from the apex court for preparation of draft for the tribunal.
Notably, the Odisha government had written to the Centre for constitution of an inter-state tribunal under section 3 of the Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956 (IRWD Act) to resolve the Mahanadi water sharing dispute between Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
Odisha had also sought the Apex court’s intervention to direct the neighbouring State to stop project works in the upstream of Mahanadi and direct the Centre to form a tribunal to adjudicate the matter.
