Chennai: Amid escalating infighting in Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK, the Madras High Court today stayed till Wednesday (September 20) the conduct of a floor test in the Tamil Nadu assembly to prove the majority of the Edappi K Palaniswami government.
Justice M Duraiswamy passed the order as the speaker informed the court that he was not in a position to tell whether he would pass orders in the disqualification proceedings against 19 rebel AIADMK MLAs before a floor test is conducted.
The judge passed the interim order on a plea moved by the DMK seeking a direction to the governor to take immediate steps to conduct a floor test in the assembly to prove the ruling government’s majority in the House.
The AIADMK has 134 MLAs in the 233-member House. A seat is lying vacant after the death of Jayalalithaa. The majority mark is 117.
