Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday ended his fast that began on Saturday to restore peace amid farmers’ agitation in the state.
The chief minister had began his indefinite fast on Saturday and met a large number of farmers along with the kin of four of the five farmers killed in police firing on Tuesday in Mandsaur.
Farmers’ protests started last week in Mandsaur over demand for better prices for their produce and debt relief. The protesting farmers blocked roads, vandalised property and set vehicles on fire on Tuesday. The police opened fire to control the situation.
The situation escalated when five farmers died on the spot and another farmer, who was allegedly detained by police died on Friday at a hospital.
