Islamabad: Much of the speculation and rumours about Pakistan’s next army chief ended on Saturday as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed Lt Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) while Lt Gen Zubair Hayat has been appointed as Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee (CJCSC). Both will be promoted to the rank of four-star generals.
Lt General Qamar Javed Bajwa of the Baloch regiment, is currently serving as the Inspector General of Training and Evaluation in General Headquarters at Rawalpindi.
An LoC specialist Bajwa has led the 10 Corps, which serves in the area along the Line of Control, and the Force Command Northern Areas and also served under former Indian Army Chief Gen. Bikram Singh as a brigade commander during a United Nations mission in Congo.
Both generals would take up their new posts from Tuesday, the day the current army Chief Raheel Sharif retires sources said.
