Cuttack: The Orissa High Court today ordered a Crime Branch (CB) probe into the ongoing tussle between police and lawyers after a lawyer was attacked by Chauliaganj cops on August 28.
The High Court, after hearing two petitions filed by Orissa High Court Bar Association and Nationalist Lawyers’ Association, directed the CB to conduct a thorough probe into the incident and posted the next hearing of the case to Monday.
According to sources, a DSP-rank officer will investigate the incident.
Both the associations had prayed the court for a probe into the matter by a retired or a sitting HC judge, disciplinary action against the accused policeman and compensation for the injured lawyer.
On Monday, members of Orissa High Court Bar Association had decided to continue their ongoing strike to protest against the alleged assault on a lawyer at Nua Bazaar in Cuttack.
The future course of action will be decided after another meeting scheduled to be convened on September 5, the bar association members said.
On August 30, members of the association had resorted to a cease-work protesting against the August 28 incident. Following which, the Commissionerate Police had suspended three personnel for police excesses.
The Cuttack Bar Association members too had followed suit after a group of agitating lawyers had allegedly set a PCR van on fire during the agitation in front of the RDC office in Cuttack.
