Labourer dies of asphyxiation; contractor held

Cuttack: Lalbagh police arrested a contractor after a labourer died due to asphyxiation while working in a manhole at Mahidas Market in Cuttack on Saturday.

The contractor, identified as Ramakanta Swain, was arrested after the death of the labourer, Ujala Das, who was working in a 20-feet-deep manhole. Two other labourers—Sudhanshu Nayak of Jagatsinghpur and Rakesh Kisku of Jharkhand—who were also working in the manhole have taken ill.

According to sources, the three labourers were working in the manhole on Saturday night. Due to lack of oxygen inside the manhole, Ujala could not breathe properly and died.

While the two sick labourers were rescued and admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, the body of the deceased was hidden following the direction of the contractor.

Meanwhile, the death of the labourer triggered tension in the area. Upon being informed, Commissionerate police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The police registered a case and arrested the contractor. The body of the deceased was seized sent for an autopsy.
