Bhubaneswar: Two Kaudias and five police personnel were injured in a clash at the Lokanath temple here on Monday. The condition of a Kaudiya was stated to be critical and he was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital.
Sources said the Kaudias had an altercation with temple servitors over pouring water on the Shiva Linga in the shrine. The other kaudias approached the police and alleged that while they were waiting for hours, the servitors allowed other devotees into the temple by taking money.
But when the police personnel did not respond, they protested against the former vehemently, leading to the clash. The police had to resort to a lathicharge to control the situation.
In yet another incident, a Kaudia, Thukuri Pradhan (41), of Sarkoli village under the Gurudijhatia police station of Athagarh block, died on Monday due to a stampede inside the Dhabaleswar temple here.
Sources said Pradhan was in queue to pour water when the crowd jostled with each other and broke the
queue in the absence of police and unlucky Pradhan became the victim of the stampede.
He was rushed to Athagarh SDHM where doctors declared him brought dead.
Locals said the temple administration and the police are responsible for the tragedy due to their callous attitude towards law and order, discipline and crowd management in the shrine, where thousands of Kaudias throng to the temple on every Monday in the month of Shravan.
